DetailTo celebrate the return of the Olympics to France, each medal is inlaid with a small piece of metal from the Eiffel Tower, symbolizing the perfect combination of the Olympic Games, a top international event, and the iconic French architecture. The Paris 2024 Olympic Organizing Committee chose to work with Chaumet, a jewelry company under the LVMH Group, a senior partner of the Olympic Games, to jointly design and produce the medals.
Eiffel Tower combined with Paris 2024 medals
For athletes, winning an Olympic medal can be life-changing and it is everyone's dream. Therefore, it is no surprise that athletes are involved in the design process of the medals for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The Paris 2024 Athletes' Commission, led by Martin Fourcade, was involved in a campaign to find the symbol that best represents the next Olympic Games. The final idea was unanimous: to combine the iconic building of France and Paris, the Eiffel Tower, with the most prestigious medal of the Olympic Games.
Each Olympic and Paralympic medal features a piece of iron from the Eiffel Tower. The world-famous "Iron Lady" was built between 1887 and 1889 and has undergone several restorations since then. During this process, some metal elements were permanently removed and preserved. With the help of the global event of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the Eiffel Tower operator is pleased to see these historical treasures of Paris and France shine again.
Medal DesignThe Paris 2024 Olympic Committee chose Chaumet, a renowned jewellery brand under LVMH, to design the medals. Chaumet, renowned for its craftsmanship, transformed the medals into a precious piece of jewellery, inspired by three things: hexagons, light and gemstones.HexagonThe metal of the Eiffel Tower on the medals is presented in a hexagonal shape, which fits the shape of the French territory and symbolises the country’s joint efforts to deliver a historic Olympic and Paralympic Games. After removing the “Eiffel Tower brown” paint, the metal reveals its original colour. The unique historical metal is set in the heart of the medals, engraved with the Paris 2024 logo, and blends perfectly with the gold, silver and bronze medals.
RadianceOn the same side of the medal, thin lines extend outward at regular intervals around the hexagonal metal of the Eiffel Tower. These lines are not carved, but embossed, making the already radiant medal even more three-dimensional. This idea symbolizes both France's radiance on the world stage and the athletes' brilliance on the field.
GemstonesTo perfectly combine two iconic symbols, the Eiffel Tower and the Olympic medals, it took great craftsmanship and clever design. Following the concept proposed by LVMH and Chaumet, the medals are inlaid with a piece of metal from the Eiffel Tower. Six metal ornaments hold the hexagon in the center of the medal. The slightly concave shape of the medals made the gemstones possible and also added depth to the design on both sides. The six metal ornaments are set into the medals in the shape of "Paris rivets", which look similar to the famous Eiffel Tower rivets, further echoing the design theme. The design of the medal ribbons is also inspired by the Eiffel Tower. The medal ribbons for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games include a framed image of the Eiffel Tower. The Olympic medal ribbons are dark blue, while the Paralympic medal ribbons are dark red - a mixture of the two paints originally used for the Eiffel Tower ("Venetian red" and "red-brown").
The story on the other side of the medalsAs with every previous Olympic Games, the other side of the Paris 2024 medals tells the story of the revival of the Olympic Games in Greece. Since 2004, it has become a tradition to feature the goddess of victory Athena Nike on the other side of the Olympic medals. The other side of the medals is adapted from the image of the goddess of victory designed by Elena Wozni and the Olympic Stadium of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. In 1896, the goddess of victory witnessed the revival of the Olympic Games at the Panathinaikos Stadium. The Acropolis, another essential element of the Olympic medals, appears for the first time in the design of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games alongside the Eiffel Tower, cleverly combining the inspiration of the ancient Greek Olympic Games, the origins of the modern Olympic Games and the Paris Olympic Games. -
